OCEAN is a concert of new music for large ensemble written for a group of about thirty musicians by composer Sulaiman Zai. It is an annual event and the fourth such project written by Sulaiman Zai in the last three years.
The approach is a "new" approach of writing for the specific players involved in the group as was done in earlier times. The composer would find out what players were available in the area and then write specifically for those players.
OCEAN is fun music to play and to listen to and is made up of players including strings, classical guitars, brass, percussion, voices, piano and more. The music is written with the players and their skill levels kept in mind by the composer. The players are challenged to play music never heard before, knowing it was written for them specifically. This creates a wonderful sense of community between the players and the listeners as well. It is created and performed with a sense of joy in presenting something brand new to the listener.
